Blockchains have ignited much excitement, not only for their realization of decentralized financial instruments that do not require trusted intermediaries, such as Bitcoin and distributed ledgers, but also as an alternative approach to solving classical problems in the areas of fault-tolerant distributed computing and cryptographic protocols. The workshop on “Cryptography in the Blockchain Era” focuses and discusses the deeper connections among these areas, including the formalization and understanding of the cryptographic tools that enable blockchains, and their impact on and application to “classical” cryptographic notions and problems.
